The Traditional Learning Centre (TLC) is an alternative program within the Calgary Board of Education system, committed to providing excellent academic programming and character education to average and above average students. Although the program is academically rigorous, it is not reserved for elite students. It is designed for all students who are motivated to work with teachers and parents to thoroughly develop their ability to achieve excellence in a structured, virtues-oriented environment.
The Traditional Learning Centre program features direct whole-group instruction for Math and Language Arts; early literacy development through explicit phonics, spelling and grammar; and a virtues-focused environment to develop responsible citizenship and strong character. As with all alternative programs, there is an enrichment component that complements Language Arts and Math instruction. French as a Second Language instruction begins at Grade 1 and band instruction is compulsory at Grade 5. Students wear a uniform that represents their commonly held value of a liberal arts education.
Glamorgan School is transitioning to the TLC program. This 2008-2009 year, Glamorgan School offered the TLC program to 237 students from Kindergarten to Grade 4 and the Regular program to 57 students in Grades 5 and 6. The TLC program will be expanded to Grade 5 in the 2009-2010 year and then to Grade 6 in the fall of 2010. As long as a minimum of 15 students are enrolled in the Regular program, this program will be supported for the current Grade 5 students to complete their Grade 6 year at Glamorgan School. As of the fall of 2010, Glamorgan School will be a dedicated Kindergarten to Grade 6 Traditional Learning Centre, serving Area IV.
